Koskisen summer exhibition: a barn full of history
In addition to exhibition stands, Messua’s services include a wide range of spatial design – from corporate showrooms to exhibitions. A great example is the two distinct history exhibitions created for Koskisen Oyj, each housed in a unique setting.
The red-painted barn in Huovila Park, Kärkölä, blends into the landscape so seamlessly that one could easily miss it. Tucked beneath the trees, the barn surprises visitors with a thoughtful exhibition covering all the essentials. Opened in June, the exhibition traces Koskisen’s journey over the past 100 years – from Kalle Koskinen’s early sawmill ventures to a modern international timber company.
“This isn’t just an exhibition – it’s an immersive spatial experience that brings Koskisen’s story to life in a way that’s both atmospheric and easy to grasp,“ says Messua’s project manager Jonna Simola with pride.
Sharing a company’s history with a human touch
Simola explains that designing and implementing the exhibition in such an unusual environment required foresight. Trade fairs typically last days or weeks, but this summer exhibition is open for three months – demanding attention to everything from logistics to pollen and insects.
“The barn is essentially an outdoor space. We had to factor in weather exposure, transportation needs, suitable materials, and even bugs. But that’s part of what makes this so special. This isn’t just a display – it’s a living environment that embodies Koskisen’s identity,” Jonna explains.
Messua was given full creative freedom for the visual concept. Koskisen provided written material and guidelines on key historical events to highlight. The outcome? A dozen display panels presenting the company’s history in a clear, relatable, and recognisably “Koskisen” tone.
“The role of Koskisen’s people is strongly emphasised throughout. Photographs, stories, and quotes from the CEO illustrate how crucial individuals have been to the company’s journey. Projects like this are a joy to create – Koskisen’s way of telling its story through its people is both warm and impactful. That feeling resonated with us too,” Simola reflects.
Of course the guestbooks are made of wood
Visitors can explore the 100-square-metre space comfortably, encountering Koskisen at every turn – whether standing, walking or seated.
“A log supported by wooden trestles made from Koskisen timber is a key element in the space. Logs are, after all, at the core of Koskisen’s business. Details such as the guestbook table, also crafted from Koskisen materials, are designed by our own Jukka Tiihonen. The plywood table edges are purposefully left visible to showcase the material’s layered structure – and naturally, the guestbook cover is made of Koskisen’s thin veneer,” Simola smiles.
Another exhibition is on the way
This summer installation won’t be the only collaboration between Koskisen and Messua. A second history-themed exhibition will open this autumn at Koskisen’s headquarters. While the space is entirely different – rustic stone walls, slanted window structures, and iron staircases replacing the barn’s timber – the visual clarity and brand continuity remain just as precise.
“But that’s a story for another time,” Jonna grins.
These Koskisen exhibitions showcase how Messua’s expertise extends well beyond trade fair booths. Spatial storytelling and cohesive design concepts are becoming an even more vital part of our services.
“In addition to exhibition stands, we create branded showrooms, employee spaces – even historical displays in barns,” Simola summarises.
